Secluded though the village was, it was not untouched by outsiders. A natural spot of beauty on such a magical evening led travellers to the little village and with the heat and frenzy of the night an enjoyable night was had by all. With the visitors packed up and gone a few days later there was no reason for them to ever visit again, although nine months later, into the world came a babe with brown hair, a mis-match of her siblings before her but over the course of her first year her colour faded and settled into the Tuuri red the family was known for. Was there doubt of the father? Perhaps some. Did it matter to the loving parents? Not one bit. Taika-Satu Kyllikki Tuuri was forthright from the moment she could talk. She had the mind of a problem solver and she was known for wanting to get involved in all that was going on in her village, from wilting crops to foxes, Tai had a solution. Got a problem? No you don’t. “Problem” is not in Taika-Satu’s vocabulary. There was no such thing as a problem to her - only a challenge yet to be solved. She had, and still has, a very straightforward outlook on life - you cannot control the actions of others, but you can control your own. Bad things happen, they happen all the time, but what matters is how you deal with it. Sometimes the bad things are really bad, tear apart your home, cause you to flee, watch loved ones die kind of bad. Other times the bad things are puzzles, like how to connect with others in a new country, how can you fit in and make a new life for yourself? Tai could not only do it but she did it. Tai lost siblings, close friends, cousins, loved ones. She was fourteen when their village was attacked by those wielding powerful magics. Tai still sees the death and destruction when she closes her eyes, flames leaping from the roofs she’d sat and played under as she’d grown. The fields she’d played and worked in were burnt, but there was only one thing she could do - run. She took hold of her younger sister’s hand and pulled her along, helping her to speed up through the thick vegetation. While people panicked - a justifiably so - Tai thought ahead, she knew the paths and tracks but she also knew her way through the fields and crops on the outskirts of the village. She tried to look to the sky for guidance but so much smoke filled the night she had to rely on herself. Tai led her sister and a few others through the fields and then through the woods until eventually they found safety. Later she and her sister were reunited with their mother and relocated to a new home. “Ei ole mikään konsti olla rohkea, jos ei pelkää.” “It’s not a big deal to be brave if you are not scared.” Tove Jansson (writer) Just as life is a part of death, so fear is a part of bravery. Tai knows that all in life is connected. She was fourteen when she was thrown into a whole new world, forced away from her homeland, her village. She found a whole new world awaited her at Hogwarts and she had to learn a new way of life impossibly fast, but she did it. Quick, adaptable, forward thinking she had to learn fast, and first things first was a new language - English. Her new school, a place called Hogwarts, saw her placed into Ravenclaw. Tai still had some of her siblings with her but she knew she would see the others again when it was allowed. Hogwarts was strange like that. There was a lack of freedom and trust that left Tai feeling caged so she found a solution - as she always did. It took a few months but Tai learnt to become an animagi, another few months and she was able to complete her transformations, her final form - a fox. While Hogwarts was a challenge, Tai found freedom with her new form. It afforded her the ability to run the school grounds, make her way into the forbidden forest, and find her way to local villages. Thankfully breaking the law and enjoying the company of plants wasn’t the only joy that Tai had at Hogwarts, after her success with English she picked up another language, then another, and another. Her magical grades suffered but she felt as though she was doing something more worthwhile with her time. She hated the castle but when she learnt another language she felt as though her mind could travel to the farthest reaches of the globe. Berlin, Budapest, Seoul. They were all at her fingertips and on the tip of her tongue. Hogwarts was unusual but so was life in this new world. Everything was always so fast and materialistic, but Tai didn’t mind it so much. She bought into the fashion, enjoying the many different clothes and not having to make them herself. She enjoyed music and even the city life but people were always so busy that it seemed they never took the time to stop and appreciate what was around them. Tai couldn’t be doing with that fast paced lifestyle 24/7, just little bits and pieces of it now and again. In her heart she had a love of nature and knew she could never have a career that kept her closed up, locked away from the world like Hogwarts had her. Tai dabbled in different career paths, doing what she could to get by. There was no one job for her, waitressing at a restaurant was somehow more soul crushing than being a student at Hogwarts so she left that job hastily. She worked in a florist for a while, and while she loved working with flowers, her arrangements left something to be desired. She’s translated a few books into various languages but it was a heavy workload and so she stopped after her contract was up. In and out of jobs Tai always kept herself afloat, always found ways out of her predicaments. Currently she’s working for the daily prophet. She travels the UK as a photographer, occasionally free-lancing for publishing companies in need of pictures for their latest books. She enjoys the flexible hours, the freedom it affords her, and the chances to meet all kinds of people. Occasionally work dries up and so she teaches English to other children that, like her, had to leave their homes for one reason or another. Quite often she takes those lessons outside, taking her tutees to different locations so they can practise their English with real people in real situations.
