close your eyes and fall asleep, pray to god for no bad dreams
A list of words that Helley had banned around her was stuck to her office door - wedding, in-law, step, husband, nuptials. Anything that pointed to a consensual wedding was not in Helley's vocabulary and she wouldn't stand for it from anybody else. Anything that suggested that this was okay and just a way of life was not to be tolerated and she would snap the head off of anyone that said anything about the day. How it was well known in her office, Helley could only speculate. She suspected Leo's idiot brother had blabbed to a few of his friends, a few of whom worked somewhat adjacent to Helley, and from there her whole department found out. They'd found out that today was the day she was signing a contract with Leo that would classify them as married and she fucking hated it.
Sitting in her office, sorting through her paperwork, Helley was listening out for a knock on her door. The new department head was arriving today and nobody knew who it was. There were mumbles, rumours here and there but no one ever talked to her about those things because she usually threw something at their faces if they tried bothering her. Helley didn't give a shit. She didn't give a shit about office rumours or who the new head was. She'd turn up as the office greeted their new commanding officer, and then she'd fuck off back to her office, grab what she needed and then follow up on leads. Oh shit. Realisation dawned on her that she couldn't leave the Ministry, if she went out into the field there was no telling how longs she'd be gone for chasing leads, gathering information. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Today was paperwork for the morning because of her plans at lunch. It was Leo's day off so she'd pulled a few strings and booked an appointment in the officiant's offices to get this whole mess over and done with sooner rather than later. She didn't want to spend months dwelling on the inevitable. She'd packed up everything at her place and organised her wardrobe to fit her entire bedroom. How in the fuck she was going to live with a man she just wanted to crawl into bed with she had no idea, she'd just try and throw herself into work more than ever. Spend as much time at the Ministry as she could and return to her new home for proper rest whenever she knew Leo was working.
A knock at her door dragged Helley back from her thoughts. She opened her eyes and shoved her paperwork into the top draw of her desk - organised to her but a complete mess to just about everybody else. She locked the draw with a twist of her wand and left her office, locking it behind her. Others seemed to be coming out of their offices and everyone made their way to the front desks. The doors to the department would open, some new dickhead would welcome them all with a smile on their face and then they'd fuck off and try to leave their mark on the department, something that would only go a screw everyone over. Helley was sceptical that anything good could come of a new department head. Being one of the last to arrive, Helley tried to move to the back but there was no space, she was forced to stand at the front, sour face on full display. She felt someone nudge her in the back. She huffed and folded her arms. Today was a shit day, a new department head was only going to make it shitter.
