The rain fell down heavy outside the window, and her mother had barely had time to realise she was about to give birth when she had to start pushing, and within a few hours she had her third child in her arms. Emmy had a shock of dark hair and a sweet little face, the image of her mother, she was the final addition to the Knight family. They had a lot of money, Emmy's great grandparents being the brilliant minds behind the Knight Bus. The fortune was passed down, growing and funding beautiful lives for the Knights. Emmy wanted for nothing. She wasn't spoiled. Her parents believed in living life as simply as possible, not wasting money or being lavish for the sake of it, but they never let their kids go without. Emmy always felt a bit guilty every time they spent money on her. She'd ask for just a few things for birthdays and was overly grateful for whatever she got. She was always conscious about her parents and siblings happiness and how her words and actions affected others. She loved it when things were happy and peaceful and went out of her way to try and keep it that way, loathing arguments between her siblings, her stomach churning any time she felt tension at home, which wasn't often. She dreaded going to Hogwarts. Her brother and sister were there, yes, but she didn't want to leave her parents, her home, her familiar routine and all of her belongings. Emmy always hated change, and going to a boarding school was a very big change. What about her dance classes? What about her dogs? What about her bedroom and her toys and her things? She didn't want to leave any of it behind, but she had no choice. Her dad got her a sweet little elf owl to keep her company, and she sat alone on the train, not wanting to bother the other kids and not really knowing how to approach them anyway. She was horribly shy and awkward in social situations, often retreating into herself and waiting for others to make the first move. Luckily a few bolder kids joined her compartment, and she spent the journey reading a book and listening in to their conversations, desperate to join in. She sat under the sorting hat for a very long time while it dithered over whether to put her in Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. She was clever, a fast learner with a wise head on her shoulders. But she was also kind and caring and fiercely loyal. In the end she was placed in Hufflepuff, where she found herself surrounded by the loveliest people. She made friends with her dormmates, who were all the greatest bunch of girls she could have asked to share a room with for seven years. Emmy settled in surprisingly well, considering she didn't want to be there. She missed home awfully, sending letters home every day at first and relying heavily on her little owl to help her cope. She made friends from other houses, mostly louder people who helped her build her confidence and be herself a bit more. She spent a lot of time in the library, hiding out in cosy corners with her nose buried in books. She was content with a quieter school life, though she did get dragged to parties and other social things with her friends, where she tried her best to be a wallflower and not get noticed. She'd have loved to join the frog choir but was too shy to give it a go. The loudest she got was screaming for her team in Quidditch matches. As clever as the sorting hat predicted, Emmy left school with perfect grades. She had no intention of using them for anything significant, and got herself a job in a music shop after graduation. She liked being surrounded by music. She loved to sing and dance in the staff room when nobody was around, and enjoyed having access to all the latest songs and albums from her favourite artists. She got her own little house, a cottage in Hogsmeade, when she was nineteen. Her parents bought it for her, they'd wanted to get her something fancy, but as usual, Emmy insisted on something simple, something she wouldn't feel guilty about. For her twentieth birthday her dad bought her a shop. An actual shop. And not just any shop. Her favourite shop. Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade. He'd only bloody bought the thing out for her and now she owned her own book shop and had to learn how to keep it running. Emmy loved it. It was the most fun job she'd ever had, immersing herself in books, having the shop exactly as she wanted it, and bringing pleasure to other bookworms. She's been working there for six years now, and is content with her life. She still lives alone, having gone through a couple of failed relationships and realising that she's better off with her pets and her books.
