Cal was a loud little thing, but Elijah was quiet and observant as a toddler. He would soak his surroundings up, reading people well before deciding if he wanted to invest his time in them. He could almost have been called cautious, but he had a quiet confidence that put his parents at ease. He could handle himself just fine. Cal was more outgoing, always trying to lead Elijah on adventures around the garden. It was when they were five that their first show of magic happened. Cal was climbing a tree so Elijah climbed up after him, the twins always wanting to be together. They reached the higher branches with some difficulty, and sat there swinging their legs happily, chatting away when the thunder storm struck. Cal panicked as lightning hit the tree and Elijah reached out to try and grab him. The branches they were sitting on weren't strong enough to hold them in the swaying winds and they snapped, both boys falling from a great height. Until they weren't... They flew across the garden, as though riding on broomsticks like something out of a Halloween movie. The boys were giggling like crazy until their mum came running out of the back door, screaming her head off. They crashed down into the bushes next to her and she took them into the house, hysterical over what she'd just seen. They tried to move on from the incident, nobody talking about it after that stormy day, but Elijah and Cal would whisper in secret. They were magical. They were like superheroes. They would play pretend in their bedrooms about it when they were alone, but they didn't say a word to their parents, who were sensible folk. Growing up with both parents being doctors was a bit strange. They had loads of money and two cars and they went on loads of days out, but Miranda and John were far too sensible as far as parents went. They said that Elijah and Cal would grow up to be doctors too, one day. It was a respectable job, a strong career that would see them do well in life. Elijah thought they must be right. Grown ups knew everything, right? Wrong. They didn't know that their sons were wizards. They had to be told by some witch showing up to the house when they were ten and explaining everything. No one was really surprised after the flying incident in the garden, but there was some initial reluctance from Miranda and John to send their boys off to some unknown magic school. They were assured that their children would be perfectly safe and well cared for, and after a long winded decision-making process, it was agreed that they would attend Hogwarts. Attending a magical school was something Elijah took in his stride. Observant and bright as he was, he took comfort in having his brother by his side. The train ride and journey across the lake were incredibly interesting. Not necessarily exciting because he had his guard up and was trying to stay as calm as possible so that he could remember it all clearly when he lay in bed that night. The castle did take his breath away, and he loved the extravagance of it all. And a talking hat? That was pretty cool. He was sorted into Ravenclaw, his brother being put in Gryffindor, and he was secretly disappointed to be split up from his twin. They would see each other every day, of course, but it was the first time in their lives that they'd been properly apart overnight. Elijah didn't sleep properly for the first month. He took his time settling in, but he took to magic like a duck to water. He had a natural ability to pick things up quickly and without much struggle. Potions was incredibly easy to him, Charms were a breeze, Herbology endlessly interesting. Defence Against the Dark Arts was an opportunity to better himself, and learning to fly on an actual broom was so much fun. He became prefect in his fifth year, being a model student and taking the role seriously. Elijah dated a few girls as he got older, but only one stood out. Helley Lestrange was the year below him, a Slytherin girl who was absolutely terrible at potions (in Elijah's opinion). She was cute and sassy and she made him laugh. He loved the challenge of teaching her what she needed to know, helping her improve her skills, and eventually, snogging her face off. He spent his entire seventh year dating her, along with being Head Boy and acing all of his final exams. Of course he was going to be a healer. His parents wanted it, and he had all the right grades to breeze his way through healer training. Which made it all the more confusing when he broke up with Helley at the end of the school year, graduated with all O's, and lasted three months in healer training before realising it wasn't for him. He didn't like the part where people died. He didn't like being responsible for someone living or dying. The pressure to be able to fix anything that came through the hospital door was too much. And seeing people in some horrific states played on his mind every night when he closed his eyes to sleep. He couldn't block it out, and he hated it. How did his parents do this every day? He told them that he wanted to drop out, to do something different, but they weren't happy. Disappointed and desperate, Elijah did the only thing he could think of to escape a life he didn't want. He packed his bags, robbed a fair sum of money from behind the fireplace at home, and left for America. It wasn't long before he had a job in MACUSA in the law enforcement department, of all things. He couldn't stomach not being able to heal people, but he liked the idea of stopping criminals from hurting people in the first place. He eventually became a hit wizard, staying there for a few years before moving up to the auror department. Steadily working his way up the ladder, he became one of the best aurors they had. Elijah ended up marrying a healer, of all people. Scarlett was someone who healed him regularly, and he admired her ability to stomach the job he could not. They married when he was twenty six, staying together for six years before things fell apart and they separated. He couldn't bear living in the same city as her, and a longing for home settled deep into Elijah's bones. He put in for a transfer to England, hoping to get a spot as an auror in the ministry. He didn't expect to be told that the head of department had just resigned, and he didn't expect to be recommended for the job. So when he got it, he was blown away. So he has recently made the move back to England, where he needs to settle back into his old life, build bridges with his family, and find his feet with the new power that has been bestowed upon him.
