Jonathan Kane
PERSONALITY Likes: Drinking, outrageously forward women, redheads, reading, the moon, stars, astrology, mythology. Dislikes: Being a vampire, not being able to bathe in the suns rays, secrets, prejudice, purebloods - they taste disgusting to Jonathan - probably too much inbreeding, puns, anger, fighting - although he'll do it if necessary. HISTORY Mother: Muriel Kane, deceased Father: Thomas Kane, deceased Siblings: None Partner: None Exes: Alice Fairbank, deceased, killed at the stake by Thomas Kane for being a witch Children: none Others: Elisabeth Wildes, sired her, close friend, confidant Maximus Eridanos Devereaux, long time friend, like a brother A long, long time ago, longer than your grandparents can even remember, a man named Jonathan Kane was born in Edgewood. At the edge of the woods in a small hut lived in by three spinsters, Muriel Kane birthed her son into the world. He was beautiful. She cradled him in her arms and named him after her father. The spinsters returned Muriel to her home where her husband waited for the news of his child. A boy. Good. All was right with the world and Thomas Kane left, returning to his work in the dead of night. Silently the spinsters saw to it that Muriel was tucked up and that her sweet boy was clean, clothed and warm. Muriel took care of the rest and the spinsters returned to their hut, not welcome in the village. Jonathan Kane grew up with a strict father that worked for the Church, a man trained to torture confessions from witches. If Jonathan stepped out of line he received what was known as the ‘Cane of Kane’. It was passed down from father to son for generations, leaving blemishes on its victims that were known as ‘the mark of Kane’. Around his father, Jonathan was a strait-laced boy who did as he was told, when he was told, but he learnt all too soon that the pain of a beating was worth more than sacrificing his conscious. To soften Thomas Kane’s harsh parenting, there was no one. Muriel had been killed. Accused of witchcraft by her own husband, she had been sentenced by a judge to burn at the stake. Jonathan had been less than two years of age, and surely, one would think a husband would want to preserve his family, but Thomas Kane would do anything for power. His wife was spending more and more time with the spinsters that lived in the forest, and when she would return she would smell of all kinds of herbs and the smell of smoke was unmistakeable. Thomas Kane built a case against her fast and accused his wife and the three spinsters of witchcraft. The spinsters were never caught, but Muriel would not leave her son, she went back for him, just as Thomas knew she would, and he was ready for her. She was caught, trialled and hanged until dead. Once he was grown, as a man, Jonathan was well respected in his own right, a friendly man that was respectful and honest. He worked hard doing an honest days labour putting up fences. He was a striking contrast to his father who kept information of everyone and anyone, especially those whose positions he could exploit for his own gains. Jonathan did as he was told by his father, he always did as he was told because even as an adult, his father was not afraid to use the Cane of Kane and besides, Jonathan was a respectful man. Jonathan kept to himself usually, until he met a woman by the name of Alice. She was beautiful, fair skinned and hair as red as fire. She ignited passion within him that he’d never experienced before. Plenty of women had come his way, but Alice was something else; she was mystifying. They courted for a while before Jonathan introduced her to his father. His father was very much against the pair but left the decision up to Jonathan. Jonathan thought hard on the matter, caring deeply about his father’s opinion, but he couldn’t ignore the love he felt for Alice. He proposed to Alice and she accepted, the couple were engaged. A month passed and Alice took Jonathan to meet people she called ‘friends’. They lived in the woods in an old hut, three spinster women that welcomed him into their home. A feeling of familiarity washed over him, but he was unsure why. He looked about the hut, feel as though he’d seen it all before. It felt like a dream, everything, it was confusing. Thoughts swirled through his mind and everything was … was … Jonathan regained consciousness on one of the beds that sat at the edge of the hut the spinsters lived in. Alice was stood over him, patting his forehead with a wet cloth while another waved foul smelling herbs under his nose. He sat up quickly, his head rushing as he looked around the hut, “I need to leave.” He’d said, pointing to the door which swiftly flew open as though a strong gust had blown it open, but there was no wind, not even the slightest of breezes. It took a while but the spinsters, with the help of Alice, helped explain so much of Jonathan’s history that he felt positive it was all crazy talk. His mother had been killed by his father for witchcraft, she had, indeed, been a witch, blackmailed into a marriage with Thomas in order to protect her own parents, but without her wand she had not been able to escape. The spinsters had been in his life for always, teaching him magic, helping him to channel it carefully so that his father would not know, and then placing spells on him so he would forget what he had learnt until the next time. They kept his magic dormant by keeping his memories asleep within, complex magic but something his mother had been working on when she had been pregnant, knowing that something might someday happen to her and her son would be unprotected. Nothing made sense to Jonathan and he left and made his way to a tavern, drinking himself stupid until he passed out and the patrons returned him to his father’s home. Jonathan woke to the news that Alice had been arrested and was on trial for witchcraft. His father had tortured her until she confessed. Jonathan rushed to free her but he was too late, her limp body was tied to a stake, flames grasping at her clothes, climbing her body, having already claimed her life. With so much new information, Jonathan staggered away from the sight of his beloved burning. Confused and in a state of disbelief, he headed to the tavern, numb from everything, unable to comprehend just what exactly was happening. His legs carried him but he had no idea what he was going to do. A man sat down beside him and order him an ale, introducing himself simply as Beaumont. He promised Jonathan that he could have his revenge on his father, but that it would come at a cost - loyalty. Jonathan didn’t need to think. There was no need to hesitate. Jonathan agreed at once and the man lead him from the tavern, down the dark alley, and grabbed a fistful of Jonathan’s golden hair. Bearing fangs, the man bit into Jonathan’s neck and drained him to near death. Beaumont kept Jonathan from falling to the ground but Jonathan’s mind was gone. He had blacked out. Jonathan had no concept of time. He awoke in a dark space, the only light came from a candle across the room, and even that felt too bright. Beaumont greeted him, practically throwing a peasant at him and telling him to feed. Feeling famished, Jonathan devoured the man. Once he was done, Beaumont kept his word and took Jonathan back to his village of Edgewood where together they made the people suffer, decimating over half the population. After that night, life started anew for Jonathan. He learnt how to use his powers as a vampire and a wizard, all his memories and lessons unlocked. He visits Alice’s grave every year, taking her some daffodils, apologising and telling her all he’s done, the good and bad. And there has been a lot of bad. Too much to go into. He tries to do good where he can, but he feels he can’t make up for all the bad that he’s done. Deep down he will always be a man of God, and he feels his soul is doomed to damnation. The deaths, he lost count of them all on his first night, but at least he’s not turned many, he’s always been glad of that. They are not a heavily populated species, but he feels that they shouldn’t be, the only companion he’s ever made was Elisabeth and that he only did out of revenge. Overall the last 400 years have been eventful. Most of his things are thanks to his abilities to compel simple mortal minds. He has friends, but not many. He moves a lot so as not to rouse suspicions of his nature because mortal minds can only be compelled so much before they become corrupt one way or another. Humans are weak, and Jonathan prefer to not have much to do with them at all. OOC Play By: Brad Pitt Your Alias: Cas! |
