close your eyes and fall asleep, pray to god for no bad dreams It was the first of the month and Helley had the movie already picked out and set up on the big screen in the tv room. Helley was already in her forest green, silk pyjamas, just trying to get the rest of her movie snacks ready. Popcorn was popping and a tray of chocolates was ready to be devoured. A mix of sweet treats was ready with a chocolate fondue set, and lots of fizzy drinks sat waiting to moved to the next room. Helley loved a horror movie, scary movies were her thing, but Izzy was very much a romance drama type of person and so they compromised. Helley would suffer the likes of The Notebook or Titanic or whatever romantic drama Izzy wanted once a year on the first of February, and in return on the first of October Izzy would suffer through a horror or thriller movie of Helley’s choosing. This year Helley was going easy on Izzy, Halloween was set up on the tv and ready to go. A wave of Helley’s wand and the popcorn moved from the stove and poured into a bowl, a salt grinder floated into the air and started liberally salting all the popcorn, not that Helley would be eating any, she’d be making herself sick on the chocolate, but it would be worth it. "It'll be starting soon!" she called out through the flat, figuring Izzy was probably getting some kind of leak-proof pads on for when she absolutely pissed herself in fear. Halloween wasn't too scary, Helley had picked more frightful movies in the past, right now she was just feeling like a classic horror film. Tilly came running into the kitchen, jumping up to Helley who snuck her a sneaky little puppy treat. "Your mamma's going to need you tonight, Silly." She gave Tilly a little head-ruffle and made her way to the lounge, treats and drinks all following behind, settling on the coffee table in front of the sofa. Tilly had run off, no doubt to find Izzy, while Helley sat down on the sofa, curling her legs up and pulling her knitted blanket over her lap, ready to start the movie. She grabbed the remote, turned up the volume, and leant forward, grabbing a fondue stick, jabbing it into a marshmallow, and then dipping the marshmallow into the melted chocolate. She turned the marshmallow around, trying to keep as much chocolate on it as possible before she popped it in her mouth. She let out a satisfied moan and melted back into the sofa, waiting for Izzy and Tilly. Isabel Elara RowleOutfit: Forest green, silk pyjama top and shorts with silver lace trim Notes: Yay! BUT MAYBE YOU'RE HOPING for a fairytale too Izzy had been to the loo twice and couldn't put it off any longer. It was their annual scary movie night and there was no getting out of it. She could only hope Helley had picked something on the milder end of the scale, something that wouldn't give her bad dreams for the rest of the week. She had on her fluffy pink pyjamas and some matching slippers on her feet, which she was sure Tilly would steal at some point during the night. Izzy paused in her bedroom to give herself a pep talk in the mirror. She blew out a long breath, shook out her hands, and grabbed her sunflower fleece blanket from the cosy nook in the corner of the room. It wouldn't protect her from monsters or murderers, but she could pretend it would. Tilly trotted into the room, tail wagging as though they weren't about to have the most terrifying night of their lives. "I don't know what you're so happy about, Tills." she muttered, scratching behind one of Tilly's floppy golden ears. She couldn't really delay it any longer. Helley was shouting for her and she wouldn't get to show Helley the delights of another romcom come February if she chickened out tonight. Sighing, she headed for the living room with Tilly in tow, plopping herself down on the sofa and grabbing the bowl of popcorn off the coffee table, hoping it would keep her distracted. Tilly settled in beside her and she glanced at the screen. "Can you tell me when the jumpy bits are coming?" she asked, using her blankie as a pillow. SWANSKI

close your eyes and fall asleep, pray to god for no bad dreams Izzy finally came plodding out of her room and Helley was surprised she wasn't hidden behind a giant teddy bear. Izzy wanted some forewarning for the jumpy bits and Helley smiled a devilish smile, "You know I can't do that, it would spoil the fun!" Helley loved a good jump but there weren't really any jumpy bits in Halloween, although Izzy might disagree. Helley found it comforting, predictable, even funny to watch, she was in a mood to be entertained tonight. She his the play button and the dramatic music of the opening sequence started up, sending Helley's spirits soaring. She watched the glowing pumpkin head and read the names on the screen as she reached forward and grabbed some M&Ms, keeping them cupped in her hand, popping one in her mouth at a time as the camera got closer and closer to the lit pumpkin head. Merlin tonight was going to be brilliant! Isabel Elara RowleOutfit: Forest green, silk pyjama top and shorts with silver lace trim Notes: Yay! Scary movie month!

BUT MAYBE YOU'RE HOPING for a fairytale too Refusing to spoil her own fun, Helley refused to warn her about jumpy parts. Izzy rolled her eyes and stared at the screen as the movie started. Tilly snuggled in beside her, trying to stick her nose in the popcorn bowl, and Izzy nudged her snout away, eyes glued to the screen. "This is not so bad," she said, reading the names on the opening credits. Granted, the movie hadn't started properly yet, but the glowing pumpkin hadn't been scary, and the background music wasn't too creepy. She stole a glance at Helley, who looked incredibly content in her silk green pyjamas, stuffing her face with M&Ms. Had she actually picked something gentle for this year? Izzy curled her feet up off the floor just in case, not wanting anything to grab her ankles when she wasn't expecting it. SWANSKI

close your eyes and fall asleep, pray to god for no bad dreams The camera zooms closer and closer to the pumpkin until it was only the eye and the nose. The screen went black as the director's name came up. Haddonfield, Illinois. Halloween Night 1963. Children chanted an old Halloween rhyme and then an owl hooted, only crickets filling the void of sound. The camera approached a white house as though you were in the point of view of someone. The exterior of the house had overgrown bushes and a carved pumpkin sitting on the porch. It looked through an open window where a teen couple were canoodling on a brown floral printed sofa and Helley was hooked. Her eyes didn't dart away for even a second as the movie played on. A clown mask and a little dialogue later and the pair were running upstairs, leaving the camera to move back around to the front of the house, looking up. The bedroom stairs light turned off and there was a sharp chill of notes struck. The camera went back to the open window and beyond, making its way to the back of the house and through the open back door, entering a dark kitchen, the music still shrill and chilling. BUT MAYBE YOU'RE HOPING for a fairytale too "They're gonna die." She just knew it. Her spidey senses were tingling, and as she watched the couple on the screen, she knew they were going to die a horrible death at some point. Maybe not right away, but nobody survived horror movies aside from the main character. Izzy kept glancing nervously at Helley, but she was fully riveted, eyes glued to the screen. Munching her popcorn extra hard, she buried her free hand in the curls under Tilly's ear, trying to soothe herself with the calming stroking motion, using the crunching popcorn to drown out the creepy music a bit. "There's somebody in the kitchen. Is there somebody in the kitchen?" She meant the kitchen on the telly, but Izzy couldn't help a quick glance towards their own kitchen, which was lit up light blackpool. She'd left every light in the flat on on purpose, and she'd be sleeping with hers on tonight. SWANSKI

close your eyes and fall asleep, pray to god for no bad dreams Helley ignored Izzy's commentary, her best friend's voice nothing but a background noise like the creaking of the ceiling from the neighbours above or Tilly's panting. Helley barely blinked, popping M&M after M&M into her mouth, chewing slowly so as not to miss too much of the tension while Izzy made a fuss with her popcorn. Helley knew all too well there was no one in the kitchen, but she would be lying if she said she wasn't enjoying Izzy's utter terror. This year she was going easy on Izzy, but next year she was going really scare the crap out of her best friend. Was it evil? Just a little, but Helley would love it and Izzy wouldn't sleep for a week. An arm dressed in some kind of green and cream, silky top pulled open a draw, grabbing out a knife. The camera moved through the house, going past the dining room and into the lounge, looking a the sofa the teens had been on moments ago while the pair talked upstairs. The camera moved toward the bottom of the stairs where the boy could be heard saying he had to go and the girl asking him to call tomorrow 'Yeah, sure' The teen had gotten what he wanted, Helley thought, there was no way he was going to call. The camera moved back and the teen boy came down the stairs, not noticing the person with a knife in the living room and left through the front door. The shrill notes never stopping as a clock rung out the camera moved up the stairs, the landing dark. The camera looked into a room, the clown mask from earlier on the floor. A hand reached down and picked up it up, the shirt sleeve showing more colours, like a clown costume. The screen went black for a moment, the suspenseful notes still continuing to play uninterrupted and the images came back n screen only through the shape of two eye holes. The person with the knife had put on the clown mask and was looking in the bedroom, a shirt on the floor, the teen girl humming from farther in the bedroom. The camera moved slowly deeper into the room, the girl sat naked in front of a vanity, brushing her hair. The masked camera looked down at the messy bed and then moved toward the teenager 'Michael!' she scolded, covering herself with her hands before the screaming started. It was so anti-climatic, so weak that Helley couldn't help but laugh as Michael brought the knife down over and over, the camera turning to the knife for a moment wile he killed the teen. Eventually her bloody body was left on the floor, Michael turning around and then heading out of the room, down the stairs and out the front door, a car rolling to a stop at the front. Michael walked up to the man and woman getting out of the car. 'Michael?' came the man's voice. The camera changed angles, looking to Michael as the clown mask was pulled off. A young boy, six years old, was stood in his clown outfit, knife in his hand, camera panning out. Isabel Elara RowleOutfit: Forest green, silk pyjama top and shorts with silver lace trim Notes: Yay! BUT MAYBE YOU'RE HOPING for a fairytale too "I knew it!" Now there was a knife and lots of creeping around the house, and she felt satisfied that she'd managed to predict what was going to happen. If she could do that all through the movie then there might not be too many jumpy parts. She watched with a grimace as the killer stabbed the teenage girl over and over. If there was one thing Izzy wasn't, it was squeamish. She could handle blood and guts without breaking a sweat so that part didn't bother her at all. What did bother her was the utter confusion she felt when the killer was revealed to be a kid. "It's a kid? What!?" Izzy blinked, completely baffled. That wasn't how it was supposed to go. "Because that's not creepy." Was Helley going to engage with her at all through this horror fest? Izzy pulled a face at her to check if she was even aware that anyone else was in the room. SWANSKI

close your eyes and fall asleep, pray to god for no bad dreams The screen went black and then the white writing appeared again, only it was Smith's Grove, Illionis now, then the dae appeared after, October 30, 978, rain could be heard. A thunderstorm. A car came onto the dark screen, a man sat in the passenger side while a nurse drove, smoking her cigarette, focusing on the road until the man asked her if she'd 'done anything like this before'. She responded with 'only minimum security'. He informed her the drive way was up ahead and she spoke of their gibberish, whoever they were. The two talked back an d forth about a patient and the nurse relit her cigarette. They spoke of medication for the patient when he would face a judge and then silence, only the rain for a while until the nurse spoke again, talking to the doctor about never letting the patient out, never wanting him to leave. Chilling, tense music started again as the pair spotted patients in their white gowns out in the rain, an urgency in the doctors voice as he urged the nurse on and then demand she stop the car. He made his way to the gate while a patient climbed the car and reached in through the window, grabbing at the nurse. In her panic she hit the accelerator of the car, the car moving erratically until it crashed. The nurse was free of the hand, laid across the front bench of the car. A hand came down over the passenger side window and hit the glass, cracking it. Helley gave a small chuckle, smiling at the tele as she continued eating her M&Ms. Isabel Elara RowleOutfit: Forest green, silk pyjama top and shorts with silver lace trim Notes: Yay! BUT MAYBE YOU'RE HOPING for a fairytale too Now there was a woman in a car. A nurse. "Oh, great. Guess who's gonna be terrified at work for the nest month." She focused on her popcorn, not wanting to look at the screen too much because she just knew something bad was about to happen. It was raining, there were patients outside. It was just a disaster waiting to happen. She ruffled Tilly's ears for comfort, crunching on some popcorn when the drama struck. Izzy let out a loud squeal, jumping in her seat as a hand cracked the glass on the car window. "Jesus bloody christ!" Tilly sat up and stole a mouthful of popcorn while Izzy was distracted. Her heart was hammering in her chest and Helley was just laughing, not at all bothered. Izzy stared at her in disbelief. "How are you not bothered? Are you made of stone?" She had to be to not jump at that. SWANSKI

close your eyes and fall asleep, pray to god for no bad dreams The nurse made a run from the car and Helley looked at Izzy, smiling a bit, "Oh come on! It's practically a comedy. It's a total classic. I definitely went easy on you this year." Helley looked back to the screen, the car was driving away, a patient having gotten into it. The doctor came running over claiming that the evil was gone and then he ran off, leaving the nurse in the mud, rain pouring down upon her. These scene changed to a quiet suburban street in the daytime. Haddonfield was written across the screen and then it changed to Halloween. An eery tune was still playing as a camera came to look at a white house, a black car sat in the driveway as a teen left her home, carrying her school books. A man came out after her, telling her to drop off her key off at the Myers place, Helley's mouth twitched into a smile as the scene carried on. The girl crossed a road, looking about the street, her books, and then to a boy that came running up to her - evident from their conversation that she was his babysitter. They conversed down the street, she told the kid she had to drop a key off at the Myer's house and he sounded surprised. The camera moved to the Myer's house, white like all the others on the block but dilapidated and dirty. Windows missing, wood hanging down. The teen made her way to the house, the camera angle changing to inside the house behind a door with a broken viewing window and a dirty fly screen. She approached and as she bent down she the camera changed again so the audience could see her place the key under the mat. She turned to walk back down the path, the camera angle changing once more to inside the house looking out, only as she walked away the music built and a silhouetted figure looked out the broken window. The boy claimed the house was haunted and the pair walked off, the boy heading to the left, the girl walking down the street, singing, a person stepping into frame on the right side of the screen, only a fraction of his body visible, though he was wearing some kind of jacket. BUT MAYBE YOU'RE HOPING for a fairytale too "If shitting your knickers is your idea of comedy, yeah," Izzy said, voice dripping with sarcasm. She was so uncomfortable. Why she agreed to do this once a year was beyond her. Maybe they should cancel next year, if this was Helley's idea of going easy on her, then she'd hate to think what it would be like if they watched something that was Helley's idea of terrifying. She tried to think about Valentines day and what movie she might pick for them to watch next year, but the creepy house on the screen was distracting her. Izzy squirmed in her seat as the teenage girl on the screen put a key under the doormat, obivious that some creep was watching her from the window. "Does she not have that freaky sixth sense that tells you when someone's staring at you?" she demanded. "How is she so oblivious?" SWANSKI

close your eyes and fall asleep, pray to god for no bad dreams Helley smirked. She was enjoying Izzy's discomfort almost as much as she was enjoying the movie. They were only fifteen minutes in while doctors argued about the missing patient that had stolen a car the night before. Helley took the lull of students n a classroom, listening to a boring teacher to grab some more snacks. The music turned again, a creepy tune almost covering the voice of the teacher until Laurie, the teen, was called upon. She looked at the window and eventually the bell rang and children ran out of a middle school, all dressed up for hallowe'en, a young boy being teased as he carried a pumpkin. "Just punch them in the fucking face, then they'll back the hell off." Helley knew some kids were softer than others, they didn't have it in them just to punch a bully, especially when there were three of them and they were all bigger than you, but Helley had been outnumbered plenty of times and she'd never gone down without a fight and a chunk of Melaughnie Chamberfelds tacky dyed blonde hair in her hands. As it was, the kid was tripped and fell, splitting his pumpkin. One of the bullies was stopped by someone in a boiler suit, the same figure from earlier, and the shrill music came back. The man in the boiler suit followed the boy that had been picked on from a bit of a distance, tense music tickering until the man in the boiler suit got into a car that read 'For Official Use Only' on the side and the State of Illinois crest. In the car, the man followed the boy and drove up beside him, slowing down while the boy was oblivious. The car moved on and the music stopped. Helley munched on a few m&ms, "You doing okay?" She said, looking over to Izzy. Helley loved her little horror movie nights with Iz, it was tradition at this stage, just like the romantic dramas in February. Helley enjoyed movies and she loved a comedy, even a rom-com, but it was fun to switch up the genre to something she didn't get to watch often because her schedule was too unpredictable and Izzy was never up for a horror or thriller. It was always more fun to watch a movie with someone else. Isabel Elara RowleOutfit: Forest green, silk pyjama top and shorts with silver lace trim Notes: Yay! Scary movie month!
